The Southern Outer Banks of North Carolina are beautiful, maintain a rich maritime history, and require the utmost respect from Captains and crew. The nickname, Graveyard of the Atlantic, was given to this section of waters offshore of the Outer Banks and contains more than 1,000 shipwrecks, tragedies of weather, war and piracy since the early days of sailing. The first recorded wreck off the Carolina coast was in 1562 at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Since then, ships have come to rest north and south along the coast, claiming thousands of lives and untold riches. 4 | OBX
